River Dragons Overcome Sea Wolves in OT
Biloxi, MS – The (2-2-2) Mississippi Sea Wolves took the (5-1-0) Columbus River Dragons to overtime on Saturday night, falling 5-4 after a game-winning goal from Austin Daae at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
“The overall effort from our guys was a lot better than what we had last night,” Sea Wolves head coach Phil Esposito said after the game. “The team gave a lot more than they did last night against an experienced River Dragons team. My biggest regret is that we battled hard for the lead only to give it right back shortly. That comes with having a young team and guys who are trying to get familiar with those high-pressure situations.”
After suffering slow starts the previous two games, the Sea Wolves staked a 2-0 lead in the first period between Daniel McKitrick (8:59) and Chris Hunt (17:42). McKitrick concluded the opening stanza with one goal and an assist, while Yaroslav Yevdokimov notched a pair of assists.
The River Dragons flipped the script in the second period to tie the game at two apiece. Kirk Underwood put Columbus on the board at 10:13 before Cody Rodgers found the net at the 16:33 marker.
One minute and 52 seconds of the third period was all it took for Hunt to drive home his second of the game for a 3-2 Sea Wolves edge. Lane King replied one minute later as Columbus evened the score. The teams exchanged goals one more time in regulation between Mississippi’s Justin Barr (5:08) and Cody Rodgers of the River Dragons (10:54).
The 4-4 draw at the end of three periods led the Sea Wolves to overtime for the second time of the season, but Daee’s rebound at a loose puck in the crease solidified the 5-4 River Dragons win and their weekend sweep.
Mississippi goaltender Greg Harney stopped 23 of 28 shots faced in his first appearance in net this season. Hunt, the second star of the game, extended his point-streak to six games with four of those being multi-point appearances.
The Sea Wolves round out their six-game homestand this Friday, November 11 when they welcome the Port Huron Prowlers to Biloxi. The matchup begins at 7:05pm at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
